Eccoci di fronte ad un’altra crisi politica in Italia. Uno spettacolo che non è divertente, neanche da fuori, perché si ripete troppo spesso… come una canzone che ha poco più di un ritornello da offrire. Perché succede di nuovo? Questa volta, la stabilità di governo è messa a prova perché Silvio Berlusconi, leader del centro-destra per gli ultimi 20 anni, ha ordinato ai ministri del suo partito di ritirarsi dal governo. Inoltre, durante la settimana, i deputati del Pdl avevano già annunciato dimissioni di massa se ​​Berlusconi perde la sua immunità parlamentare nel corso di un voto al Senato il 4 ottobre.

Sì, Silvio Berlusconi ha ancora una quota significativa del sostegno popolare! Sì, è stato il leader quasi indiscusso del centro-destra per 20 anni! Sì, egli si è dimostrato l’unico candidato del centro-destra in grado di vincere le elezioni contro la sinistra! Sì, la sua capacità di leadership e campagne sono impressionanti! S, i suoi avversari politici contano sul potere giudiziario per “eliminarlo”, perché non erano in grado di farlo in una elezione! Sì, il PdL ha giocato un ruolo importante nel consentire la formazione del governo Letta ed era l’attore più responsabile dopo le elezioni anticipate nel scorso mese di febbraio!

Ma ora basta! Per i cittadini e politici italiani veramente moderati: è il momento di cambiare, di ripartire con un nuovo leader, e di mettere gli interessi del paese davanti a quelli individuali.

I falchi del PDL criticano la Giunta per le Elezioni, accusandola di mescolare la politica e il potere giudiziario. Ma anche le mosse recenti del PdL violano la separazione tra le questioni giudiziarie e quelle politiche. Partendo dal presupposto che i diritti di difesa di Silvio Berlusconi sono stati violati e che la Giunta è un organo giudiziario non-imparziale, allora la lotta deve continuare sul terreno giuridico (ad esempio attraverso un ricorso dinanzi alla Corte Europea dei Diritti Umani a Strasburgo), ma certamente non in Parlamento.

Democristiani, liberali, e tutte le altre persone che si identificano con i moderati non possono accettare che un intero paese e le sue istituzioni democratiche diventino ostaggi del destino di una sola persona, quanto importante questa persona sia stata negli ultimi anni. Questo è contrario ai nostri valori ed agli interessi dell’Italia e dei suoi cittadini!

Inoltre, un nuovo episodio di instabilità solo paralizzarebbe le riforme necessarie per stimolare la competitività economica, creare un quadro giuridico ed economico favorevole alla creazione di posti di lavoro, e riformare le istituzioni per evitare di ripetere situazioni in cui il paese è quasi ingovernabile.

Di più, se il paese e le sue forze politiche vanno verso nuove elezioni, la posizione politica ed economica dell’Italia si deteriorerà ulteriormente. Inoltre, il clima di odio tra le forze politiche rivali riemergerà più forte che mai, complicando il lavoro di coloro che desiderano un dibattito politico pacificato. Anni fa, il PdL ha fatto una campagna sul tema “L’amore vince sempre sull’odio”. Ma, in questo momento, l’odio diffuso dai falchi Pdl domina nel partito. I moderati non possono lasciare che queste persone rappresentino loro ed il centro-destra. I moderati hanno anche molto da perdere nelle elezioni : dato che il Porcellum non è ancora stato riformato, oppure i risultati porteranno ad una nuova situazione di blocco, o la sinistra vincerà una grande vittoria e gli interessi della moderati saranno a rischio se il PD costruisce un’alleanza con SEL e alcuni dissidenti del M5S. Il governo non ha ancora dato le dimissioni, per cui vorrei sperare che ci saranno almeno 16 senatori pronti ad agire come rappresentanti dei moderati ed a sostenere gli sforzi di Enrico Letta e Giorgio Napolitano per preservare il governo.

Ora è il momento di essere coraggiosi ! Il Pdl doveva riunire le varie tendenze del centro-destra e di destra in un partito per favorire la stabilità della maggioranza nel 2008. Dopo qualche successo iniziale, non ci è riuscito. Alcuni membri l’hanno lasciato ed anche ha perso una quota significativa del voto. Anche Silvio Berlusconi parla di un ritorno a Forza Italia. Moderati italiani, avete la scelta: oppure siete condannati al silenzio e l’irrilevanza in un partito dominato dai falchi estremisti le cui competenze politiche sono limitati a criticare chiunque non è d’accordo con loro, o decidete di costruire un nuovo movimento popolare, moderato e pro-europeo che sarà orgoglioso di essere membro della famiglia del Partito Popolare Europeo (EPP)! Può risultare impopolare nel breve termine, ma spesso quelli con una visione a lungo termine sono premiati. Inoltre, la politica è di servire l’interesse pubblico; il Paese ha bisogno di voi, quindi non abbiate paura e non nascondetevi! Il Corriere della Sera chiede: “moderati, dove siete?”; date una risposta!

Moderati d’Italia, la scelta è vostra! Per il vostro bene e quello dell’Italia, dovete agire!

Here we are, in front of another political crisis in Italy. A spectacle that is not funny anymore, not even from the outside, because it repeats itself far too often, like a song that has little more to offer than the chorus. Why does it happen again? This time, the government stability is challenged because Silvio Berlusconi, leader of the centre-right for the past 20 years, has ordered his party’s ministers to withdraw from government. Moreover, during the week, the MPs from the PdL had already announced a massive resignation if Mr Berlusconi is indeed stripped of his parliamentary immunity during a Senate vote on October 4^th.

Yes, Silvio Berlusconi still has a significant share of popular support! Yes, he has been the quasi uncontested leader of the centre-right for twenty years! Yes, he has proved the only centre-right candidate capable of winning elections against the left! Yes, his leadership and campaigning skills are impressive! Yes, his political opponents count on the judiciary power to get rid of him because they were unable to do it in an election! Yes, the PdL played a major role in enabling the building of the Letta government and was the most responsible actor after the anticipated elections in February!

But now it’s enough! To the truly moderate Italian citizens and politicians: it is time to change, to restart with a new leader, and to put the country’s interests ahead of individual ones.

The hawks of the PdL criticise the Senate organ competent for parliamentary immunity (Giunta per le elezioni), accusing it of mixing politics and law. But the PdL recent moves also violate the separation between judicial matters and political ones. Assuming that Silvio Berlusconi’s rights of defence have been violated and that the Giunta is a judicial organ and is not impartial, then the fight should continue on the legal ground (e.g. through a recourse before the European Court of Human Rights), but certainly not in Parliament.

Christian-democrats, liberals and all other people who identify themselves with the moderates cannot accept that a whole country and its democratic institutions become hostage of the fate of one single person, however important this person has been in the recent years. This is contrary to our values, and to Italy’s and its citizens’ interests!

In addition, a new episode of instability will only paralyse much-needed reforms to stimulate the economic competitiveness, create a legal and economic framework favourable to job creations, and reform the institutions to avoid repeating situations where the country is nearly ungovernable.

Furthermore, if the country and its political forces head towards new elections, it will further deteriorate Italy’s political and economic standing. In addition, the climate of hate between rival political forces will re-emerge stronger than ever, complicating the work of those who wish a pacified political debate. Years ago, the PdL once campaigned on the topic “L’amore vince sempre sull’odio” (Love always wins over hate). But, right now, the hate spread by the PdL hawks has the upper hand in the party. Moderates cannot let these people represent them and the centre-right. Moderates also have a lot to lose in elections: since the Porcellum (nickname of the electoral system) has not been reformed yet, either the results will lead to a new blocked situation, or the left will win a huge victory and the interests of the moderates will be at risk if the PD builds an alliance with SEL and some M5S dissidents. The government has not yet resigned, so let me hope that there will be at least 16 senators ready to act as representatives of the moderates and support Enrico Letta’s and Giorgio Napolitano’s efforts to preserve the government.

Now is the time to be courageous! The PdL aimed at uniting the various centre-right and right wing tendencies in one party, to foster the stability of the majority. After some initial success, it failed. Some members of the party have left it and it has lost a significant share of the vote. Even Silvio Berlusconi talks about a return to Forza Italia. Italian moderates, you have the choice: either you are condemned to silence and to irrelevance in a party dominated by extremist hawks whose political competences are limited to criticising anyone who disagrees with them, or you decide to build a new popular, moderate, pro-European movement that will proudly be member of the European People’s Party family! It may prove unpopular in the short term, but those with a long-term vision are often rewarded. Moreover, politics is about serving the public interest; your country needs you, so don’t be afraid and don’t hide! The Corriere della Sera asks: “Moderates, where are you?”; give an answer!

Moderates of Italy the choice is yours! For your sake and Italy’s sake, take action!
